The husband of Katherine Harris, former Florida secretary of state and U.S. congresswoman, has died. Anders Ebbeson committed suicide this morning.
Police have been at the Bay Point Drive home for hours.
Ebbeson, 68, had been in poor health, according to the family's pastor.
"Mr. Ebbeson was recently suffering from an illness but it is unknown if that is why he took his own life," explained Pastor William Hild of First Baptist Church. "The family is asking for privacy, prayers, thoughts and love from the community."
Chief Bernadette DiPino added, "We're asking the community respect the family at this difficult time. Mrs. Harris wanted the community, her family and friends to know that her husband is no longer suffering."
"My prayers and heartfelt sympathy go out to Congresswoman Katherine Harris and her family," tweeted Rep. Vern Buchanan, who succeeded Harris in office.
The couple had been married for 19 years.
