TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Tampa police are searching for a man and woman who committed a violent armed robbery and shooting in Ybor City at 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

The pair approached a couple who were walking back to their car parked in the area of 15th Street and 2nd Avenue. Police identified that couple as Kevin Dodson and Lucero "Lucy" Lemus.

Police say the man with the gun demanded money from Dodson, which he gave to him. The female suspect approached Lemus, who was sitting in the car, and the two started to argue. She pulled Lemus from the vehicle and they struggled.

The male suspect then shot Dodson in the chest and Lemus in the stomach while she was lying on the ground.

Forensics investigators returned to the scene Monday with a metal detector to search for evidence. A K9 search dog also sniffed for clues.

The crime happened near a daycare center that keeps its doors locked tight at all times.

"We try to lock our doors because we don't know who's coming or who's around," said Clara George, who works at the daycare. "If we lock our doors, somebody has to knock to come in."

The director of an adult education program next door is surprised that it happened.

"That's stunning. It's stunning," said Joanna Scaglione. "It makes you wonder what is actually going on in the neighborhood and if we are really safe."

Five blocks over is busy 7th Avenue, the main drag through Ybor.

"It's a little surprising. Everybody thought the area was getting a little bit better," said Jessica Paulus, who works in Ybor City.

Police say crime in Ybor is down recently, but still happening. Two weeks ago, Kolten Westfall was walking home when he was robbed. He was the second victim of the night.

"Late at night on the weekends, it's definitely a party place. It's where you come to go wild, go to the club, get out, have fun, but also you need to be careful," said Paulus.

Police describe the gunman as 20 to 30 years old, with long dreadlocks that were pulled into a ponytail. He had on a dark, baggy jacket.

Detectives don't have a good description of the woman who was with him.
