Runner With Scoliosis Takes Part in 2013 Philly Marathon

Posted: Updated:

About 30,000 runners turned out today for the 20th annual Philadelphia marathon, and whether you were out there pounding the pavement or cheering.

From the sidewalk, it was a big morning for the city of brotherly love. FOX 29's Omari Fleming was at the finish line.

Just 48 seconds off the Men's 2003 record time of 2:16:47, Ethiopian runner Abebe Mekuriya is the first to cross the finish line at the 2013 Philadelphia Marathon.

Finishing a marathon is a major feat considering some people collapse and need assistance as they cross the finish line but get this. For this year's third place winner it was his first marathon.

Nick Hilton posed with Mayor Michael Nutter after his third place finish. The reading native who trains in Arizona attributed his strong finish to the love he got from Philly fans.

"I had a lot of friends and family out on course every time I passed them I had goose bumps it was very emotionally charged that's what got me through second part of race," Hilton said.

These marathoners and half marathoners all run for different reasons.

Justin O'Connell ran the half marathon because he finally can. He suffers from scoliosis.

"Before surgery I couldn't walk on two feet. I've just gotten stronger over the years" O'Connell said.

If that strength continues, then maybe just one day, Justin will be on pace to run a full marathon.
