Nutter Will Accompany VP Biden To Panama Canal

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Michael Nutter will accompany Vice President Joe Biden to the Panama Canal, Nutter's office reported. The two-day tour will be part of the Panama Canal expansion project.

The project will double the capacity of the canal and allow significantly larger ships to call on US ports, officials say.

Mayor Nutter says that he's "honored" to go with Biden and sees a potential in increasing the economic activity in the Philadelphia's port.

The tour will start on Monday, November 18. Other members of the delegation will include: Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx; U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL); Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Baltimore; Mayor Kasim Reed, Atlanta.

According to Mayor Nutter's office, Philadelphia's port is in a strategic position because of easy access to an international airport. It is a major importer of perishables and chilled cargo.
