Parents are fighting to make the walk to school safer in one Polk County town. They are pushing for sidewalks along a deadly stretch of road near Tenoroc High School.
Two teenagers have recently died on Old Dixie Highway. Enrique Hernandez was hit and killed while walking to school in August. Four years earlier, Colton Meyers was hit by a car as he was walking home.
Parents have asked for sidewalks for years.
But county officials say it's not as easy as it sounds. Polk County Deputy Manager Bill Beasley told us, "Part of our challenge is that Old Dixie Highway has a very narrow right of way corridor, and part of it is through a wetland or swamp area."
Officials plan to meet with property owners along the road to ask them to grant the county an easement to build the sidewalk.
They are also taking public comments on the issue through the end of the month.
