Polk County teacher killed in crash; student injured

A Polk County teacher died in a car crash Thursday, and one of her students was injured.

It happened in Lake Alfred around 4:45 p.m.

Witnesses say a car driven by Shirelle Baldwin, 44, was hit by a truck that ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 92 in Lake Alfred.

Baldwin was a teacher at New Beginnings High School in Winter Haven. She died at the scene.

Her passenger, Taniea Baldwin, 18, is a student there. She suffered minor injuries.

The two are not related.

Charges are pending against the driver of the truck. The sheriff's office identified him as 22-year-old Christopher Fuqua of Winter Haven. He was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The intersection was closed to traffic until around 9 p.m.
