CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Hundreds of people had a rough commute home Wednesday night after their Ventra cards malfunctioned, creating a jam at "L" stops around town.

The CTA says the problem was caused by a back office server.

At the Red Line stop at State and Lake, at least 45 people waited in line after machines failed to recognize Ventra cards. Jon Knott emailed cell phone video to FOX 32 News, showing what appeared to be a Ventra melt-down.

At the peak of rush hour, CTA riders took to Twitter using #VentraFail.

@Taneishaj tweeted: "Ventra glitches, shuts down all turnstiles except one that everyone has to go through during rush hour. Good job, guys!"

@Blagofregret posted,"They screw this up more than an Ikea living room suite."

"Well it never worked, it never did work so it still doesn't work," said a woman who carried an email notice she showed workers who allowed her to go through while Meredith Tabbone says since the rollout, Ventra is hit or miss.

"We'll see if it works but there are quite a few times where you try to use it and it doesn't work," said Tabbone.

"I'm just using the old Chicago plus card. I just haven't transferred over yet because I heard there were issues," said Jeff Nogle.

A CTA spokeswoman was still trying to determine if the problem was widespread.

Earlier Wednesday night, @VentraChicago tweeted: "We understand that some card readers are down. We are working diligently to bring the entire system back up. We appreciate your patience."

The CTA says the Thursday morning rush will not be affected.
