County urges residents to clear leaves to prevent clogs

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

The leaves are continuing to fall off the trees especially after this recent cold snap. It is beautiful, but there are also some safety concerns with falling leaves. They are slick to drive on, catch fie easily and when they start to pile up near storm drains, they can lead to flooding.

Not only does that flooding cause driving hazards, but it also might lead to property damage. Storm water crews urge homeowners to stay on top of landscaping and not to blow leaves into the storm drains. Instead, they suggest bagging them up to be hauled away.

DeKalb County, like many local governments, has set up service to help rid lawns of those clogging leaves. They will take leaves in the biodegradable brown paper bags sold in stores or in containers specifically used for yard waste.

The county picks up leaves and clippings once a week on a day separate than regular trash collection.
