Hillsborough's animal shelter accepting strays again

Posted: Updated:

Hillsborough County Animal Services is once again accepting stray dogs at their animal shelter on North Falkenburg Road in Tampa.

Two viruses caused the shelter to temporarily close its doors.

The animals will be processed at the shelter, then transferred to SPCA Florida in Lakeland. The SPCA has set up kennels on an emergency overflow lot next to their facility.

Though stray dogs are being accepted, pet owners who need to surrender their dogs are encouraged to continue holding their animals for another week, or to reach out to friends, family members and neighbors for assistance.

Residents can also contact the Humane Society of Tampa Bay or other rescue agencies with available space to accept owner-surrendered dogs.

Cats were are not impacted by any of these changes.
