We daydream about our escapes for months. Then, when we finally depart, we sometimes encounter a nightmare.
A few weeks ago, Chris Chmura asked our Facebook fans for their travel horror stories. Here's a few of the sites he recommends for avoiding issues like the ones they described.
SeatGuru.com + App
All airline seats are not created equally. And thus, we have a site that helps you find the good ones -- or better yet, avoid the crummy ones. It's color-coded and driven by passenger reviews. Don't pre-assign your seat until you've checked SeatGuru.
Oyster.com + App
They've checked it out, so you won't be surprised when you check in. We also love Oyster.com's photo fake-outs, where hotel marketing photos are placed side-by-side with real photos. If deception weren't so serious, these drastically different photos would be funny.
CruiseCritic.com + App
If you want the skinny on any cruise, to any destination, on any cruise line, this is your one-stop shop. Members galore chime in on everything from the hot tubs to shore excursions; the buffet line to the ship's doctor. Suggestion: some members are overly critical. Take their impressions with a grain of salt.
FlightAware.com + App
If your flight is delayed or canceled, I can almost bet FlightAware will know before your airline tells you. It also relies on FAA data for take off and landing times, which are much more reliable than the airlines' notoriously sugar-coated estimates.
Drivers: we haven't forgotten about you. And neither has AAA. This simple calculator, which asks about your car and you trip, estimates the fuel cost in real time, based on AAA's daily fuel price updates. If you've ruled out flying for your vacation because airline tickets are too expensive, a visit here might have you rethinking the cost of driving.
