The U.S. Coast Guard is offloading another big bust this morning in St. Petersburg.
We're talking about $19 million worth of cocaine, and this is the second big bust in just a few weeks.
A few weeks ago, the Coast Guard picked up about 1,500 pounds of pure cocaine while patrolling off the Dominican Republic. It had a street value of $23 million.
The drugs were found after a high speed chase on the high seas in the middle of the night. The bad guys got away and tossed 28-packages overboard - but the Coast Guard recovered every single one.
Today, crewmembers offloaded about 1,200 pounds of cocaine. It was seized as part of Operation Martillo.
It was discovered last week when crews detected a suspicious vessel in the Caribbean Sea. That's when they seized 20 bales of cocaine.
The two suspected smugglers were later turned over to federal law enforcement officers.
The drugs arrived in St. Pete around 8 a.m.
