Violent Bala Cynwyd Bank Robbery Captured on Surveillance

Posted: Updated:

A violent robbery is captured on bank surveillance going down in the middle of the day.

"We saw the police drive up. It was within minutes that like 10 police cars were right here," recalls Beth Cooper. She was shocked to learn that three armed gunman stormed the Wells Fargo bank across the street from her food market.

The video shows one man securing the front doors, the other pointing a gun at tellers while demanding money and a third standing over horrified workers and customers forced to the floor.

"You hear about bank robberies all the time it's just that this was a little close for comfort for us," said Cooper.

It happened Monday just before 11:30 in the morning at the branch on Levering Mill Road in Bala Cynwyd. In the video the leader is seen standing on the counter and waving a gun. A woman is also seen crawling across the floor to hide in a cubicle.

Cooper says hearing what happened brings back to mind other robberies in the area. "There have been other business though that have been hit. The jeweler across the street was hit and the deli was hit. Crime happens here. It doesn't matter that we're in the suburbs," she said.

Police say the men got cash from three tellers and took cell phones from people inside. They left out the back door while one was seen still pointing a gun in the air. It's frightening to nearby business owners.

"It's scary and everybody feels vulnerable," said Cooper.

Police say the men wore ski masks and hooded sweatshirts. If you know anything about the robbery call Lower Merion Police at 610-649-1000.
