KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WJBK) -- Nearly two dozen dogs and puppies are making their way up from the south to Detroit where they will be put up for adoption.

WATE 6 News in Knoxville, Tenn. reports 21 animals from the Young Williams Animal Center left for Detroit Wednesday morning as part of a new partnership with the Michigan Human Society.

"Our centers are not full," said Erin Campbell with the Michigan Humane Society. "We don't often have small dogs or puppies. It seems spay and neutering has taken off so that's why don't have the puppies that are in the south."

WATE reports Young Williams spends most of its time at or near maximum capacity, especially during the summer when the number of pets far exceeds the number of adoptions.

Campbell says the animals will undergo a series of evaluations before going up for adoption.

WATE reports the trip is the first of its kind and could take place up to twice a month, depending on cage space in Michigan.
