Coach Causes Controversy For Taking Team To Hooters

Posted: Updated:

A middle school football coach in Oregon has been fired for holding the team's end-of-the-year awards dinner at Hooters.

He claims that the boys wanted it there, and when officials asked him to change venues, he refused.

Preston and Steve from 93.3 WMMR talked to Mike and Sheinelle about this controversy.

First, let's hear from the coach.

"I don't see the inappropriateness," he said. "I walk the walk and talk the talk, so that's reason I can't back down."

Preston and Steve partly defended the coach. They said that families go into Hooters all the time. In fact, Hooters bills itself as a family restaurant; it is not a strip club. Sure, the girls are dressed more skimpy, and if it goes against school policy, the coach should have been reprimanded, not fired.

"I will take my kids to Hooters out of protest," quipped Preston.

"The wings are really good," Sheinelle said, on a serious note about Hooters. She also shared her brief experience working at the restaurant chain. Preston also revealed that his wife once worked at Hooters.

"It's like she edited hustler magazine," Steve joked about the anchor's shock at this revelation.

Despite some outrage from parents and school officials, Mike Painter, a parent volunteer, spoke out in defense of Coach Burbach.

"He went so far over and above what any coach would do," Painter told Oregon Live. "It's unbelievable. It's because he cares."
