City commissioner Howard Wiggs was elected the next mayor of Lakeland Tuesday night.
He defeated incumbent mayor Gow Fields with 52 percent of the vote.
It was a tight race between Wiggs and Fields, and a lot of it came down to their stances on the scandals surrounding the Lakeland Police Department
The mayor supported the chief and administration, while Wiggs believes the chief should be fired.
He says that's something he plans to address early on, saying he can't support her leadership, nor can he support Doug Thomas, the city manager.
Fields believes it wasn't just his stance on the police scandal that did him in. He says a negative ad funded by the National Rifle Association played a big role too.
As for his future, he says he has a lot of community work to do, but doesn't have any other political plans at the moment.
