NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A student at Central Connecticut State University who is also the son of a professor at the school is accused of causing a gun scare that lead to a lockdown.

University spokesman Mark McLaughlin says somebody was seen "either with a gun or was thought to have a gun" on Monday at about noon.

Three people were in custody by Monday night. Police are investigating whether it was all just a prank.

A message posted to the university's website read:

"CCSU announces that the suspect in the campus incident of November 4, 2013 has been identified as CCSU student David Kyem of Newington, CT. He is identified as a 21-year-old senior who is a resident of James Hall. He has been charged with breach of peace and will be released this evening on $1000 bail bond. He is the son of CCSU Professor of Geography Peter Kyem.

The lockdown was lifted several hours later.

Chief James Wardwell, New Britain Police Dept. says, "We received 911 calls about students apparently seeing a sword or knife that was never found, at least until this point."

Chris Cervoni, chief of the campus police, says authorities are investigating whether the scare was actually some kind of prank. He says no weapons have been recovered, there was no real threat to the campus and no charges have been filed.

One student, Jordan Governale, says he walked by a masked man carrying a sword. He says he first took it for a Halloween costume but thought it was a threat after seeing the police response.

The school located in New Britain is approximately nine miles southwest of Hartford.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
