Fort Benning infantry training head bids farewell

Posted: Updated:

FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) - The head of the infantry training program at Fort Benning has left the school to head to a new post in Afghanistan.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that Brig. Gen. David B. Haight bid farewell to the U.S. Infantry School during a departure ceremony Friday. He has been reassigned as the deputy commanding officer for the Regional Command-East in Afghanistan.

No successor to Haight has been appointed, but the position will be filled temporarily until a new commandant is selected. The Infantry School trains infantry soldiers as well as the armor and cavalry.

Haight took the helm of the Infantry School about 15 months ago. The newspaper says he had to deal with the challenges of training soldiers amid civilian furloughs and reduced budgets.
