Police: 14-year-old in custody after accidental shooting

Posted: Updated:

Police in St. Petersburg say the search for a 14-year-old accused of accidentally shooting his cousin has ended, FOX 13's Alcides Segui reports.

Police said Jonathan Jude Gilbert turned himself in this morning after an overnight search. Police said they questioned him and are consulting with the state attorney's office on charges.

Detectives say the girl's mother heard a gunshot in the house Tuesday and found her daughter, Danajha Jackson, with a wound to the chest

Police say it appeared Gilbert, her cousin, accidentally shot Jackson through a wall while cleaning the gun.

"…it appears that a single bullet passed through a bedroom wall from an adjoining bathroom where the cousin had been seen just prior to the shooting," the St. Petersburg Police Department said in a media release.

It wasn't clear where or how Gilbert got the gun.

The mother gathered the kids and rushed to hospital, and police say she got into a minor car accident on the way.

While at All Children's Hospital, Gilbert separated from the family, and the hospital was put on lockdown to search for him.

Jackson had surgery and is in good condition, police said.
