The Whole Foods parking lot at the corner of North Dale Mabry Highway and Northdale Boulevard in Carrollwood became a crime scene Tuesday morning.
Yellow tape was wrapped around the premises, and several deputy cruisers with flashing lights filled the parking lot.
"When deputies arrived, they found one man deceased in the parking lot, apparently from a gunshot wound," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Larry McKinnon. "The second man that was involved in the altercation remained on the scene."
Detectives say the second man is the shooter and they identify him as David Saunders. Saunders is a former Tampa Bay Storm football player.
Outside of Whole Foods, Saunders, now a physical trainer, was confronted by the boyfriend of a woman he's training. She was there too. The two men started arguing.
"Initially, it started as verbal, and it quickly escalated into a physical confrontation then to the final outcome, which was deadly force used by the shooter," McKinnon said.
The sheriff's office says before Saunders fired, the man came at Saunders with a knife.
"The deceased produced a large, eight-inch kitchen knife. During that verbal argument, he began advancing on Saunders. And then apparently, the two became engaged in a physical fight," McKinnon said.
The man was shot in the head and died in the parking lot.
Investigators say they don't know why Saunders and the couple were in the store parking lot. McKinnon says surveillance video should help detectives with the investigation.
Detectives questioned Saunders and he was released. They say he was cooperative. Saunders is not charged with a crime, pending the outcome of the investigation.
In addition to being a personal trainer, Saunders is also a volunteer youth football coach with the Tampa Bay Youth Football League, coaching the Citrus Park Bills, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The State Attorney's Office will decide whether the shooting was a justifiable homicide or whether criminal charges should be filed against Saunders.
