Police are investigating the death of a man who fell from the 4th floor of the Tampa International Airport parking garage.

Many of the details surrounding the man's death are not yet clear.

According to a media release from Tampa International Airport, an airport police officer approached a man around 4:30 p.m. who said he was watching planes from the 8th floor of the short-term garage.

A background check showed he was a registered sex offender, the media release said.

Police later identified the man as Allen Piano, 46.

At some point, police heard from the man's probation officer, who said a shotgun was missing from the home of the man's parents, and that an arrest warrant for him was being prepared in Pinellas County.

At 5 p.m. the airport police officer found Piano on the 4th floor of the long-term parking garage, sitting in a car with a gun in his mouth.

According to airport police, Piano got out of the car and lunged at the officer. They say the officer fired shots, then Piano turned and jumped.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer is on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
