Cats seized from Brooksville home

Posted: Updated:

One cat was found dead and 11 others were seized from a Brooksville home over the weekend.

Investigators say they got a tip about possible mistreatment of animals at 12102 Peaceful Avenue in Brooksville earlier this month.

They served a search warrant Sunday and found 11 cats covered in waste and fleas. One cat was dead.

Investigators said there were full litter boxes and cat waste all over the floors, furniture and kitchen counters.

When they contacted the property owner, they say she told them she hadn't lived there since June, and she had a friend checking on the cats.

Detectives say the cats were taken to Hernando County Animal Services.

There's no word yet on any charges for the homeowner; the investigation continues.
