NYC mayor debate date change

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) - New York mayoral candidates Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota successfully asked the city's Campaign Finance Board to reschedule their debate to Wednesday in order to "properly commemorate" Superstorm Sandy.

The last of three debates between Democrat Bill de Blasio, who's leading in the polls, and Republican Joe Lhota was scheduled for Tuesday, a day which happens to mark the one year anniversary of Sandy.

The candidates released a joint statement on Sunday saying the "day should be marked with solemn reflection and remembrance."

Sandy pummeled the East Coast, killing more than 180 people and causing an estimated $65 billion in damage, making it the second-costliest cyclone in the U.S. behind Hurricane Katrina.
