Spooks Assured: Orland Park Halloween display voted scariest in Illinois

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

You might say it's a haunted house to die for. An Orland Park woman has taken her passion for Halloween to the extreme. Her house has become a tourist attraction for people who travel for hours just to get their fright night fix.

The owner, Yvonne Shurley, has been decorating her home for 14 years and each year, it seems to get bigger and better--or worse, you might say.

It's an extravaganza of ghouls, ghosts and all things ghastly that make Halloween on this block a blockbuster.

"It is over-the-top," Shurley explains. "We've been called the Rolls Royce of Halloween. We've been called the mini Disney land of Orland, and I just love that. I love to see the kids' faces, even the older people who come out here. We get massive crowds. The more the merrier to us."

Now the queen of Halloween has added a lively twist to her graveyard: live actors who are all theater students at Andrew High School in Tinley Park.

There is Norman Bates from "Psycho" on patrol with his machete. He is joined by the ghostly groom. Looking for opportunities to scare unsuspecting kids, there is the headless horseman lurking in the shadows, and a young woman who plays a living statue, modeled after the Disney haunted mansion.

"I have to make sure I don't smile and stuff, and I have to move very very slowly," explains Cassidy Gonzales, who plays the living statue. "It's really hard to do that, and especially when I have to scare people it's hard."

"It's not that hard," adds the actor playing Norman Bates. "I just keep a straight face most of the time and they are scared."

Shurley says she has people come from Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Some even book hotels in the area to come see the display.

The house is located at 17404 Deer Creek Drive in Orland Park.
