ATLANTA -

Friday marked a milestone for the Atlanta Police Department.  They have officially filled all 2,000 positions for sworn officers, and they introduced the officer who marked that goal this morning.

You might remember the slogan "2,000 by 2000."  That goes to increase manpower set by another Atlanta mayor in the 1990s.  Some 13 years later, APD has reached that goal, and the 2,000th hire is a new officer from Henry County who was all smiles on Friday.

Wesley Floyd, 23, says he made the decision to become an officer about four years ago after taking classes at Georgia Southern.  He says out of all of the departments in the state, Atlanta was his first pick.

Mayor Kasim Reed said his police force has seen a gain of 370 officers since he became mayor of the city. 

"Crime is down 17 percent since this time four years ago," Reed said.  "That's a dad that got home to his family, that's a new mom that got home to her children.  That's a boy or girl that's been saved because of the efforts of the men and women of the police department."

Recruit Floyd still has to make it through the academy, and he's currently in training.
