Youth Football League Doing Away With Trophies For All

Posted: Updated:

A youth football league in Texas has decided to do away with trophies for every child who plays. The Keller Youth Association Football League pulled the plug on the annual awards in order to teach kids that they must go "above and beyond just participating" to get recognition.

The league has scaled back on medals for participants in recent years, and starting this spring, those will be gone too.

"These kids have been raised in a society where things have been given to them. You get a reward for anything and everything. So now we don't want them to get a reward just for participating in something," Paul Quinones, director of the league, said. "You have to go above and beyond to get those rewards. That's what we want to teach the kids. In order to succeed in life you have to give 110 percent all the time, not just sometimes, but all the time."

Some parents support this decision.

"He's got ten or twelve trophies and they don't mean anything to him right now. Championship trophy he won last year means something to him," Mike Simmons, a father agrees.

However, John Summers, a parent with three kids in the league tells NBC 5, "A participation trophy is not a symbol of wins and losses," he said. "A participation trophy is rewarding a kid for their hard work."

Teresa Lugo-Sanchez commented on the post by the league, saying, "If you want your kids awarded for participation, play at the YMCA, where everybody wins."

The Director of The Keller Youth Association says the reaction to the news from parents has been overwhelmingly positive.
