Public viewing this evening for Rep. Bill Young

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A public viewing for Congressman Bill Young is today, and Congress is taking the day off tomorrow to honor him.

House Speaker John Boehner is among those expected to be at his funeral tomorrow. Lawmakers who would like to attend will be able to fly for free on a U.S. Military aircraft.

While it is normally against the rules, Boehner is making an exception because of Congressman Young's long and distinguished service to members of the Armed Forces.

Tonight's visitation is at the Army Reserve Center in Pinellas Park that is named after the Congressman. It's from 5 to 8 p.m.

The public is also invited to attend Young's funeral tomorrow at 1 p.m. The service is at First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks in Largo.

Traffic in these areas is expected to be heavy, so be aware of that.

On Oct. 9, from his hospital bed, Young announced that his current 22nd term would be his last and he wouldn't seek re-election in 2014.

The congressman was a longtime member of the House Appropriations Committee, where he focused on military spending. He and his wife frequently visited ailing service members at hospitals in the Washington area.

First elected to the House in 1970, Young was one of the strongest supporters in Congress of defense.

FOX 13 will broadcast Thursday's funeral live.
