After high seas chase, Coast Guard brings in $23 million in cocaine

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

It's a result of a high speed chase on the high seas in the middle of the night, Coast Guard officials say.

The Coast Guard Cutter Venturous picked up about 1,500 pounds of pure cocaine while patrolling off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

The street value: $23 million.

The cutter's crew was chasing the drug boat, and when they got close, that's when the people on board started ditching the cocaine, officials said.

"And when they got about 20 feet from them, they started (throwing) these bails because they knew we were there, so they tried to get rid of the evidence as quickly as possible," said Ryan Webster of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The drug boat got away, but the cutter crew was able to pick the 28 packages of cocaine tossed overboard. The haul was brought into St. Petersburg this morning.
