State attorney drops charges in Brito murder case

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The Hillsborough State Attorney's Office says there is insufficient evidence to prosecute one of the two men charged in connection with the murder of two Tampa teens.

But police say he is still under investigation.

Tavari Grant's trial was scheduled to begin October 28. Investigators said he and Charles Waits shot and killed Jeremi and Kiara Brito in June 2011.

A jury found Waits guilty just days ago.

But Friday, the state attorney's office put out a statement saying they would not be prosecuting Grant.

"The State of Florida had determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed to trial against Tavari Grant," the statement from Mark Ober's office explained.

They say the investigation into any possible accomplices of Waits is still underway.

The Tampa Police Department put out this statement Friday afternoon:

"After some recent developments in the case, the Tampa Police Department met
with the State Attorney and agreed that the murder charges should be dropped
for now. Detectives are still actively investigating possible accomplices,
including Tavari Grant."
