An exchange of gunfire with St. Petersburg officers ended with the death of a suspect overnight.
It started at a Hungry Baba restaurant on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street and ended at a nearby store. The suspect fired first at officers, police said.
He has been identified as Jason Michael Kerr of Pinellas Park, and police say Kerr had an extensive arrest record.
His suspicious activity was first reported by employees at the Hungry Baba. They say he entered the restaurant Thursday night and was acting suspiciously – sweating profusely.
Then one of the employees told police they saw Kerr waving a gun outside, and they called 911.
When officers arrived, Kerr allegedly got into a Dodge Caravan and led police across the street to the Snax Food Store parking lot.
Officers said he then swung the Dodge Caravan around toward them and fired multiple rounds from a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun.
Four bullets struck the cruisers, police said. The officers returned fire, and the man was hit.
He died at the scene, police said.
The officers involved were identified as well: 28-year-old Matthew Laliberte, 31-year-old Scott Kirpan, 30-year-old Mark Kruzell, and 27-year-old Matthew Stringfellow.
Investigators say they found cocaine inside the vehicle as well.
