Thieves steal Clearwater scouts' flatbed trailer

Posted: Updated:

A Clearwater Boy Scout troop is facing a challenge, but not the kind that'll earn a merit badge. Someone swiped their flatbed trailer, right from its secluded spot near the Global Family Fellowship Church in Clearwater.

The troop's scoutmaster noticed it was missing during their meeting Tuesday night. Louis Mihalinec says it was locked up and clearly marked as the belonging of his boys.

"On each of the trailers, there's white writing that's got my name and phone number and it says, 'Boy Scout Troop 222'. Every trailer here has that on it. So, whoever stole that trailer quite clearly knows they stole it from a Boy Scout troop," he said.

The crime is putting a serious dent in their finances. The troop just bought the flatbed last summer, after spending countless hours fundraising and saving up.

"I realize that it probably took them ten minutes to steal this trailer, but to raise the money to pay for another trailer could take us two years," Mihalinec said.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says the crooks will probably scrap the trailer for its metal or use it for their own needs.

The trailer has the Florida tag D761CG. If you have any information, you're asked to call PCSO at 727-582-6200.
