DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Thousands of people in the Detroit area either don't have insurance or are going to lose their health insurance. The "Obamacare Enrollment Team" met with Detroit residents Wednesday afternoon, helping them sign up for healthcare.

Effective January 1st Thomas Cattron and his wife will lose their health insurance. They are both retirees from the city of Detroit and are among thousands who will be forced to either sign up for their spouses insurances, or purchase insurance through the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare."  Considering he and his wife both retired from the city "Obamacare" is their only option.

The "Obamacare Enrollment Team" is working to make sure Detroiters get the best coverage possible through the Affordable Care Act.

"It's one thing to just send an individual to a website where they can decide for themselves, possibly at some level, which policy is best for them. It's another to use a licensed professional who can help you decide, help you to come through what specifically meets your needs," says Cory Lloyd, a member of the team.

The team's name and logo makes it seem like they're connected to the federal government, but they're not. The team is actually a subsidiary of 'Fiorela Insurance', a national company headquartered in Florida.

Between Wednesday and Friday insurance agents along with paid and unpaid volunteers expect to help five thousand Detroiters sign up for health insurance.

"Most of the individuals that we are helping out here are very price sensitive, and Blue Cross Blue Shield and Humana have the two free plans in the area," Lloyd says.

70 plans in all, though, are available in Michigan. You can research the other plans by checking out healthcare.gov.

Regardless of which plan you choose the law requires everyone to buy health insurance.

    Van Dyke Construction Scheduled Today

    Monday, April 21 2014 3:48 AM EDT2014-04-21 07:48:59 GMT
A massive construction project is underway in Macomb County. If you travel on Van Dyke, you know how rough it is. Now, jackhammers are out there tearing up a two-and-a half mile stretch from 11 Mile to Chicago Rd. The road will be milled, then resurfaced with asphalt. New curbs will be installed. Nine intersections get new traffic signals. Sidewalks will be ramped to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Weather permitting, the project will be finished this summer.

Ford Motor Co. on Sunday unveiled a new Escort sedan designed in China for global sale at a Beijing auto show that highlighted the growing influence of Chinese tastes on the industry. Automakers are looking to China's biggest auto show this year to help boost sales in this huge but cooling market. Total sales last year reached 17.9 million vehicles, but growth is expected to slow from 15.7 percent to as low as 8 percent, even as newcomers including Lincoln and Tesla enter the market.
