Video: Bold thieves wear snakes to steal them

Posted: Updated:

It's surveillance video that might make your skin crawl: Three thieves are caught on camera snatching snakes from a Bradenton pet store and wearing them out the door.

"They opened the cages, and just as brazen as that, took out one boa constrictor and five ball pythons," said Bradenton Petland part-owner Mark Beneck.

The three suspects are caught on camera concealing the snakes in sweatshirts.

"They were in a hoodie sweatshirt and another jacket they had wrapped around their neck," said Petland manager Marty Wolfe.

It's certainly not a tactic for the faint of heart, but Beneck says the thieves knew exactly what they were doing.

"A snake doesn't move much. Once he's comfortable and in a dark spot, he's not going to move much," he explained.

While the two employees on duty were helping a customer, the group came in and took off with $700 worth of snakes. But the bold burglary didn't stop there. One suspect returned minutes later, asking an employee how to care for the specific snakes they snatched.

Once the crew noticed the snakes were missing, the suspects were lone gone. Employees think they'll likely sell the five pythons and boa constrictor on Craigslist.

They say the theft strikes their business right in the heart.

"This is personal to us. This isn't just merchandise. This is our house," Wolfe added.

If you have any information about the crime, you're asked to call the Manatee County Sheriff's Office at 941-747-3011.
