Corbett To Release $45 Million For Philly Schools

Posted: Updated:

Governor Tom Corbett says he's releasing an additional $45 million for Philadelphia schools, but he's calling on other groups to step up and kick in, too.

The governor said that along with money from the state, Philadelphia City Council needs to pass an extension of the one percent sales tax.

He also called on the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers to commit to meaningful concessions that will affect how Philadelphia schools are run.

$45 million released by Governor Corbett's office means 400 school employees will be able to return to work. That includes assistant principals, teachers, guidance counselors and other school personnel.

Superintendent Dr William Hite says though seniority will play a role in the process, it won't be the only factor. He says efforts are already underway to get those employees back in the classroom.

"We would have liked to have begun the school year this way, but nonetheless we don't have to continue thru the year this way now that we have additional resources," Hite said.

The district is still in negotiations with The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers and is still asking for $100 million in concessions from the union. Dr Hite says that would bring back an additional 1000 employees.

Mayor Michael Nutter met with Gov. Corbett's top aides in Harrisburg on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he says the focus is on finding a funding formula at the state level.

"If we would have a rational student weighted formula on a reliant basis we would know and not be going through this routine each and every year, it's disgraceful," Nutter said.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
