'Piano Man' Billy Joel plays benefit show

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Piano Man returned to play on his home turf. Billy Joel performed a benefit show Wednesday night at the Paramount Theater in Huntington. The Long Island native raised money for Long Island Cares - The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

Joel opened his show with an oldie from 1971: "Everybody Loves You Now." Then he played "Movin' Out."

He joked it was a short commute to work.

The show, announced only Tuesday, was a warm-up for an upcoming tour.

And since Tickets sold out in 15 minutes on Ticketmaster, some were "keeping the faith" while others would be charitable.

The "big shot" spenders meanwhile, spent a couple hundred a ticket. Like one guy who told us he paid $650 per ticket -- and he bought several.

OK, but no "easy money," especially when prices on StubHub jumped to a minimum of a $1,000 just hours before show time.

Even the Piano Man himself wasn't happy about the exorbitant prices, telling me Tuesday night that he and his band weren't worth those inflated prices.

But those with a "river of dreams" to see Joel up close and personal got their wish, before he and the band are "movin' out" on tour.

Three Nassau County beaches have been closed to bathing due to heavy rainfall. County health officials say storm water runoff can elevate bacterial levels and affect bathing water quality. The three South Shore beaches that were closed Monday are: Hewlett Point Beach; Island Park Beach; and Merrick Estates Civic Association. In addition, Biltmore and Philip Healey beaches in Massapequa remain closed to bathing due to elevated levels of bacteria.
