Veteran Holds March At Gettysburg Despite Shutdown

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -

Veteran Joe Barnhart has felt what it's like to be in unfriendly territory. He served in Iraq with the Army National Guard.

But he's not used to seeing signs like these at home, telling him to stay out of a national park he's visited many times. So he held a march at Gettysburg Sunday.

Barnhart chose to march at Gettysburg for a reason, "I got promoted here, at this monument, a week before I went to Iraq," he explains. "So, that's why I picked this as my location to come to, because it means something to me."

The march started at Gettysburg's Lincoln square. It led them to the Pennsylvania monument.

Mike Kulkusky, a marcher, said, "People have the right to come and see history and learn about the people who gave their lives so we could have what we have now."

Barnhart took to Facebook to invite any fellow Americans to join him, and many did. They say they're sending a message to Congress.

Barnhart said, "These are our parks. These are our lands. We the people own this. And I'm just really proud. I'm proud to be an American, and I'm proud of everybody that's come out to support."

Some hikers have ignored barricades at parks across the country. And a few were fined by the National Park Service.

Barnhart had no problems at Gettysburg with his march.

"Somebody said that I could get up to a $75 fine. ... The government knows where I live. They can send it in the mail," Barnhart joked.

His is just one name on a pretty long list the park service would need to send mailings to, WPMT-TV FOX 43's Katie Kyros reported.
