License plate readers raise concern on LI

Posted: Updated:

GLEN COVE, N.Y. (AP) - A plan for license plate readers on a road in a Long Island community is raising concerns over privacy and how the information might be used.

Newsday reports that the Glen Cove City Council approved installation of two of the cameras on Route 107.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi says the cameras are like having another police officer in the area.

He says the data will be stored for 60 days. It'll be accessible to the police chief and four other department members.

The mayor says the public will be briefed on the plan next month.

A lawyer specializing in national security issues tells Newsday that information gathered for one purpose can be used for another at a later date.
