FOX 29 Meets Families Of Fallen Heroes

Posted: Updated:

Veterans and their families were paying a steep price for the government shutdown when death benefits for military families had been stopped.

On Wednesday, the house unanimously passed a bill to restore those benefits to the families of America's fallen soldiers.

The pentagon struck a deal with a non-profit group who agreed to pay for the benefits covering burial costs and other expenses.

FOX 29'S Kelly Kessedal spoke to family members of fallen heroes in Bucks County.

Ryan Manion and Amy Looney share a painful connection. Ryan lost her brother 1st Lt. Travis Manion

"Travis was killed April 27,2007, he was on his second tour of duty in Iraq," Manion said.

Amy's husband, Lt Brendan Looney, also died in the line of duty

"My husband was on his final mission when he was killed in helicopter crash with 8 other service members," Looney said.

Both women disgusted to hear the news the government shutdown put the $100,000 death benefits for military families in jeopardy.

It happened on a day when another fallen hero returned to Dover Air Force Base.

"To even think back and imagine another hurdle or something to deal with during that tragedy it's unimaginable for me to even think of," Manion said.

Late Wednesday afternoon the house unanimously voted to restore those benefits. The nonprofit group Fisher House Foundation also announced it would restore that death gratuity payment if the full congress didn't act on it.
