The mother of two teens murdered in their Tampa home in 2011 took the stand in their accused killer's murder trial at Hillsborough County Court.
Judy Brito broke down when answering questions about the last time she talked to her 13-year-old son Jeremi. She tearfully explained how she was away with her boyfriend on a trip to the beach, leaving Jeremi and her 16-year-old daughter Kiara home alone.
Jeremi stayed late at a friend's house. Brito says she called him from the beach just after 4 a.m. to tell him to go home to be with his sister.
Less than two hours later, both children were murdered in a violent robbery at their house.
"Kiara doesn't like to sleep by herself, so I called Jeremi and told him he had to get home, so she wouldn't be by herself," Brito testified.
Both children were shot to death, and jewelry and cash were stolen from the house. Investigators say Judy Brito sold cocaine and Kiara sold marijuana out the house. Prosecutors made it a point to ask several witnesses about Kiara's large collection of expensive watches.
On the stand Wednesday, Brito identified several pieces of jury stolen from her house. Prosecutors say Waits and a second suspect Tavari Grant knew they'd find expensive jewelry and money in the house.
Charles Waits is on trial for murder. Kiara's boyfriend JJ Hubbard, a former Robinson High School football star, testified that Kiara sold marijuana to Waits and others.
"Had you ever seen her sell marijuana before?" asked the prosecutor.
"Yes," said Hubbard.
"And where did she do that?"
"At home," answered Hubbard.
Testimony continues Thursday.
