WOODSTOCK, Ga. -

Residents in a Woodstock neighborhood are worried after one man's terrifying encounter with three bears.

Kevin Smith said he had a run-in with a mama bear and her cubs in the Laurel Brooke subdivision on Sunday night. Smith said he came face-to-face with the bears in his backyard after he went to collect his trash cans.

"I looked down and I saw my trash tipped over, and right 10 feet away was the mother bear, the smaller bears were right here, and it just ran straight at me," Smith said.

Smith bolted for the house with mama bear close behind. He took a tumble in the garage, plowing into his wife's vintage Porsche. He knocked out one of his teeth as he scrambled to safety.

"I was, I don't know, levitating off the ground to get in the door," Smith said.

Smith's neighbor, Brad Dropp, said he was watching television last week when his wife heard the bears in their backyard.

"I opened up the door to listen for myself and I heard the bear kind of growl," Dropp said.

Residents in the subdivision first spotted the bears roaming the neighborhood a few weeks ago. The animals come out at night rummaging for food. Parents worry their kids could be hurt if they cross the bears' path.

"I think those bears are not aggressive but when you've got a mother and cubs…she's going to protect those babies," Smith said.

While Smith is good-natured about his frightening encounter, he said he'll rest a lot easier when his unwelcome visitors have moved on.

"As a neighborhood, we just want the bears gone." Smith said.

Residents say the homeowners association is working with Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

With Halloween right around the corner, neighbors hope the bears move on soon.
