I-Team: 'Pinkwashing' warning

Posted: Updated:

It's October, and pink is everywhere.  In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, everyone from family members to football players are posing in pink.  And while good charities are raising money, the FOX 5 I-Team wants to warn you about something called "pinkwashing."

Nearly 40,000 women will die this year because of breast cancer.  Companies like Delta Airlines are on board to raise awareness by painting their planes' tails pink.  In the NFL, most players are flashing pink, too.

Many people also want to donate to charities that give money to research, but you need to be on the lookout for what the Better Business Bureau calls "pinkwashing."  This describes "unscrupulous companies that claim to support breast cancer," but really don't put donations toward any charity.

Just last May, the Coalition Against Breast Cancer was shut down for defrauding the public.  Investigators say the so-called charity collected about $10 million for research, education and detection.  Out of the millions collected, only 40 women got mammograms.  The rest, they say, went into their pockets.

If you want to donate to a breast cancer cause, ask how much money goes to the program.  A "portion of the proceeds" is not an answer you want.  You want to know what percentage of the money collected goes to the actual cause.

Taking on a big bank, even over something like a minor bank error, can be maddening. You feel like no one is listening. It's like being trapped in a maze you can't get out of, but somebody is noticing how frustrating that can be.
