Free Food Program Faces Closure

Posted: Updated:
Rahway, New Jersey (MY9NJ) -

Rahway’s Food for Friends may have to close their doors before the holiday season due to a lack of funding and donations.

The organization posted a message on its Facebook page last week saying: "Our Food program is going through hard times, with donations at it lowest we may not be able to continue to help our clients...As it stands now we only have enough supplies to last until the end of the year. We are looking for support from the community to continue our hunger prevention program. If you can help, please contact us and please keep us in your Prayers."

Rosann Tremarco has been the president and director of Rahway’s Food for Friends for 20 years.  It runs a food pantry and a weekly hot meal event at a church.

"Basically, some of the large funding we have always banked on, we're not getting that anymore," Tremarco says, adding, "Budget cuts in Trenton have affected them.”

The volunteer chef at Rahway’s Food for Friends said that not only has the need increased there, but the demographic mix of the needy has also changed.

On a recent visit, some people at a free hot dog lunch were displaced from Hurricane Sandy and others who had fallen on hard times and lost their job.

There were also a lot of elderly people because Rahway has a lot of lower income housing for people who are on a fixed income.

Many people are unable to donate to these places like they used to, and some are even turning to places like Food for Friends themselves for help.

New Jersey is the third richest state in the nation, yet the unemployment rate is higher than the national average. The poverty rate, at a 50 year high, is the seventh highest in the country, and New Jersey has the highest cost of living in the United States.

The middle class is the most likely to donate to organizations like food banks, but with the middle class shrinking, donations are also on the decline.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
