Christie/Buono Debate

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

The gubernatorial debate against Governor Chris Christie and Senator Barbara Buono is tonight, and many are saying that this debate is Buono’s last chance to really draw a contrast between herself and the governor.

An article on NJ.com discussed that not only is this her last chance, but maybe she can surprise people in doing well in the debate since the governor has been boasting for a while that he would win any debate against Buono.

Monmouth County Democratic Chairman, Vin Gopal, says that this is a crucial time for voters. With only a few weeks left, voters will be paying more attention to every important issue in New Jersey. Issues such as poverty, New Jersey unemployment and foreclosure rates, which are both the second highest in the nation, has been discussed before. On all of these issues, Gopal says that Christie’s stance isn’t necessarily that of the states. “There’s not an issue where this governor is on the same side. Personality. People like his personality, but Senator Buono has a case to make in front of New Jersey voters.” He said.

The governor doesn’t seem to be on the same side as the voters, particularly in regards to same sex marriage. “Two-thirds of the voters in the state support same-sex marriage, the governor’s on the other side,” Gopal said.

Senator Buono, on the other hand, supports same-sex marriage, but it’s hard for her to get her voice out. “It takes money to get your message out, and the governor is controlling the message right now,” Gopal said.

People all over the nation will be watching this debate because the governor has presidential ambitions. They want to see what he will do next, and Senator Buono needs to capitalize on this, according to Gopal. “She’s got to make the case that once the governor’s re-elected, he’s going to be looking right at Iowa and New Hampshire. His focus will not be on New Jersey. He’s running for president, and that’s why he’s taking these positions.” He said.

Gopal also says that Buono needs to show New Jersey voters that whatever the issue is, whether it be same-sex marriage, minimum wage, or creating jobs, she’s going to be on the their side.
