NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Marathon spectators will still be allowed to carry bags into the finish area.
Less than seven months after the attack on the Boston Marathon, runners and fans will pack the streets of New York's five boroughs next month. The increased security will be unmistakable.
There will be barriers around Central Park, with limited entry points with bag checks. Bomb-sniffing dogs will also be roaming around.
At the Boston Marathon on April 15, two bombs exploded near the finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260. The effects will be seen in New York on Nov. 3.
Marathon organizer New York Road Runners, though, decided it would be impractical to ban bags from the finish area. Spectators are encouraged to bring no more than one per person, no larger than the size of a purse.
