How to make pumpkin planters

Posted: Updated:

Pike Nurseries' Melodie McDanal stopped by Good Day Atlanta Friday to talk about how to create a pumpkin planter. The planters combine pumpkins and beautiful flowers, like mums, in a beautiful October arraignment.

How To Make A Pumpkin Planter:
- Cut the top out of the pumpkin. Take a large enough piece to allow for enough plants to make it attractive.
- Scoop out the seeds.  Remove as much material as possible.
- Coat the inside with Vaseline. This keeps moisture from seeping into the flesh and speeding decomposition.
- Place a 1 to 2-inch layer of charcoal on the bottom. This will help soak up extra moisture so the pumpkin doesn't rot as fast.
- Fill the pumpkin with pre-moistened potting soil. Do this by soaking the soil in water and squeezing out excess moisture as you're filling the pumpkin.
- Select the plants that you will be using in the planter.
a. Thriller Plant: An upright plant that has height. Plant 1 thriller plant.
b. Filler Plants: Plants that add color to the container. Don't be skimpy with the number of plants used.  Make it look full.
c. Spiller Plants: Plants that will spill over the side of the pumpkin. Plant 1 spiller plant.
- Lightly sprinkle with water. Don't over water!

Care:
- Water sparingly.
- Planter will last 10-12 days. Plant in the garden when the pumpkin starts to turn soft and mushy.

Weekend tip:
- Don't forget to apply a pre-emergent to your lawn to eliminate winter weeds
- This really should be done before mid-October
