Ga. children to help break world reading record

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - At least 300 Atlanta children are poised to help break a world record for the largest number of people to read the same book on the same day.

Participants are visiting the Atlanta Children's Museum in downtown Atlanta Thursday morning to read "Otis" by Loren Long.

The group reading activity is part of Jumpstart's national Read for the Record campaign, which focuses on mobilizing Americans to press for quality early education programs.

Jumpstart works to prepare students from low-income households for school through literacy and language initiatives.

Event spokeswoman, Stephanie Cunha, says children from poorer neighborhoods often start kindergarten at an educational disadvantage compared to those from affluent areas, and the gap widens as children age.

Last year, 2.3 million people participated in the campaign.
