TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting of a pregnant woman in Tampa Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The victim, 22-year-old Brianna Anderson, was pronounced dead late Wednesday night, police said.

Doctors, however, were able to save the baby.

"We're just thankful that the doctors were able to save the life of her unborn child," said Laura McElroy, a spokesperson for the Tampa Police Department.

Police on Thursday morning identified the suspect as 22-year-old Jamar Silas. He was arrested after an anonymous tip and a brief pursuit. Right now, police say he shot Anderson in the head for unknown reasons.

The shooting happened near Delaware and Chestnut, just a few blocks from Blake High School and Stewart Middle School and set off a massive manhunt that lasted several hours.

Hours after the shooting, a detective spotted the suspect's car on Interstate 275. Following a short chase, officers spun out the vehicle near the intersection of North Mayfield and East Selma Avenues, and then made the arrest.

There was another person in the vehicle, but police have not identified them.

Four schools were temporarily put on lockdown, but most students had already left because school had already let out.

Paramedics rushed Anderson to the hospital. She stopped breathing on the way to Tampa General but was revived. Doctors saved the baby with an emergency C-section.

"I heard something; it was like a firecracker sound. It was like muzzled," said Maurice Harris, who lives in Anderson's neighborhood and later realized that was the sound of a gunshot. "It touches my heart that something like this happened to her. It's worse because violence against anyone, especially woman, it should never happen."

Police say Silas was Anderson's boyfriend. It's unclear if he was the baby's father.
