City adding new fire station in Port Tampa

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

When a fire breaks out in your home, every second counts. Now, the people who live in Port Tampa can rest a little easier.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn helped firefighters break ground on a new fire station Wednesday on Interbay Boulevard.

It's in an area that has been in desperate need of a new fire station. The old station was built in 1961.

The fire chief says this has been a long time coming.

"Now with this station, not only the newness of the station, but putting it in a better response area, as well as to be able to provide a more aggressive and quicker response, they are absolutely just tickled pink to have this new station coming up," Tom Forward said.

They hope to have the station fully operational by June.
