Many residents in Hillsborough County can soon expect a new trash can, new trash system and new trash collection days.
Your old garbage cans are being replaced by much larger, gray garbage carts. There are some changes you need to know.
Out with the old and in with the new. Starting this morning, residents in un-incorporated Hillsborough County can expect some big trash changes. There will be a new garbage and recycling collection system. It will now all be automated.
This means a mechanical arm will now lift and empty cans instead of a worker. Officials say it should speed up trash collection, making for a cleaner pickup service. They say it's safer for their employees.
So all week long expect to start seeing the changes - you should soon receive a new gray roll cart for trash and a new blue cart for recycling.
Here's what you need to know:
- The 3 foot rule - keep your new carts at least three feet from the curb, mail box, cars, etc.
- Feel free to fill it - everything must fit inside the carts - items left outside will not be picked up.
- Keep or Toss - as to what to do with your old can - either toss it in the new gray cart or take it to a community collection center, or keep it and use it for yard waste.
- Your garbage days may have changed - so check out your schedule online.
Again, this is only for un-incorporated Hillsborough County – not city of Tampa residents.
Also, if you live in Sun City Center or Kings Point, your automated service begins in January, so look for new carts then.
