2 Firefighters Hurt Battling Day Care Fire

LEVITTOWN, Pa. -

iPad video captures a day care fire that left two local firefighters hurt. Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked it.

Thankfully, the firefighters weren't seriously hurt, and nobody else was injured.

But it was still a tense afternoon at the Magic Cottage Day Care located on Appletree Drive in Levittown, FOX 29'S Dave Kinchen reported.

The Bristol Township Fire Marshal is at the scene trying to figure out how this fire started.

In the meantime, everyone is thinking about two firefighters that were injured fighting this blaze.

You can see in this video, recorded on an iPad, persistent flames bursting through the roof of the day care Saturday afternoon and reaching two alarms with two firefighters getting hurt on the job.

"Oh man!" shouts one person on the clip as video shows what happened after a fire hydrant somehow blew up, hitting one firefighter in the leg.

"I just heard an explosion, like, and I Iooked down, and everybody started running towards the guy," said Shawn McClellan, who captured the images and was shocked.

"I went down, and it looked like the fire hydrant blew right out of the ground," McClellan said.

Chief Ralph Gumbert, of the Levittown Fire Dept., said, "The second firefighter was injured performing interior firefighting. He had a shoulder injury."

The fire chief says the injured personnel will be OK.

It took crews from at least five departments to get the blaze under control, with many busy on the roof due to flammable Styrofoam layering that interfered with progress.

"It seemed like they would go out and, boom, pop back up again. It looked like they had about 25, 30 guys up on that roof trying to put it out."

All of this was going on before the eyes of a devastated day care owner, Andrea Vreeswyk, who described herself as "stressed, a little stressed."

"I have to call all the parents and let them know," Vreeswyk said.

She's organizing contingency plans for next week, a job she did not expect to do.

"I just thought it was probably a minimal fire and I was going to come up to the school and there's going to be some firefighters taking care of it, and when I got here it was a blaze," she said.

The owner of the day care tells me any children that go here will be relocated to their facility in Yardley starting next week.

In the meantime, fire authorities tell us the firefighters injured were treated and released at area hospitals, Kinchen reported.
