In a situation Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor called a "stunning betrayal," a Tampa Police detective has been arrested and charged with grand theft.
Detective Jeanette Hevel stole $1,900 in money orders from the TPD evidence room in December of 2011, Castor said.
She then deposited them into her personal bank account, the chief added.
The money orders had been seized as part of a tax fraud investigation.
Castor said she learned from the IRS three days ago about the theft.
She was arrested Friday and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.
Castor said she had been with the department since 1986, and said she had a "stellar" career.
But she said detectives are now reviewing every interaction she has had with the evidence room.
"Thieves usually don't do it once," Castor said.
